Job Title: Senior Data Engineer

Role Overview

We are seeking a talented Senior Data Engineer with deep experience building highly scalable, cloud-based GraphQL API layers to deliver sports and betting data across multiple digital platforms.

In this role, you will design and implement a seamless data ingestion, processing, and delivery ecosystem that integrates streaming data with high‑performance query capabilities. You will work closely with cross‑functional teams to define and evolve a federated GraphQL architecture, driving the future of sports and betting data integration within the CBS Sports digital ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

• Build new foundational capabilities using Domain‑Driven Design (DDD) and Test‑Driven Development (TDD) to power features across CBS Sports digital properties.
• Help lead the design, development, and optimization of core sports GraphQL subgraphs and services within a federated architecture.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies, including daily standups, backlog grooming, and sprint planning.
• Practice DevOps by writing comprehensive tests and deploying continuously to production with strong observability and monitoring.
• Review peer designs and code, providing constructive feedback and participating in technical discussions and weekly deep‑dive sessions.
• Partner with product managers to develop scalable technical solutions for data-driven features leveraging GraphQL for data integration.

Key Projects

• Building a GraphQL API layer for seamless data access and integration across multiple services.
• Designing and implementing a core data platform that powers all CBS Sports Digital products by ingesting, processing, and storing data from hundreds of sources across various transports and data stores.
• Defining a distributed tracing and observability system for web services within a GraphQL ecosystem.
• Containerizing core systems to reduce infrastructure management overhead and improve scalability.

Qualifications

Required Skills & Experience

• 5+ years of experience in data engineering and data system development.
• Strong experience designing, implementing, and maintaining GraphQL schemas, optimizing query performance, and ensuring efficient data retrieval.
• Hands‑on experience with:
  • JavaScript / TypeScript, Python, Node.js
  • Relational, NoSQL, and key‑value databases, including Aurora MySQL, DynamoDB, MongoDB, and Redis
• Experience operating in distributed, cloud-based environments, preferably AWS, handling high‑transaction workloads.
• Proficiency with modern build strategies, CI/CD pipelines, unit testing, and automated integration testing.
• Familiarity with GitHub, issue tracking tools such as Jira, and GitOps practices.
• Proven ability to design technical solutions, provide estimates, and assess risk and feasibility.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent professional experience).

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Qualifications

• Experience with Apollo GraphQL, WunderGraph, or Cosmo.
• AWS Certifications.
• Experience building ETL pipelines using data orchestration platforms, cloud services, and modern frameworks.
• Background working for an online company in digital media or content creation.
• Knowledge of sports and gaming industries.
